A kitchen can look straightforward on a plan, then reveal a dozen decisions once work begins: where the new sockets will sit, whether a wall can move, when the worktops can be templated, and how the family will manage without a cooker. This guide to kitchen renovation timelines sets out what normally happens, how long each stage takes, and where a well-managed project makes the greatest difference.

For most homeowners, a full kitchen renovation takes around six to 12 weeks from the first day on site. The wider process, including design, choosing materials and ordering the kitchen, often takes three to six months. A simple replacement in the same layout can be quicker. A kitchen that involves structural alterations, a rear extension, underfloor heating or bespoke joinery will need more time and careful coordination.

What affects a kitchen renovation timeline?

The biggest factor is not the size of the room. It is the amount of work hidden behind the finished cabinets. Replacing units and worktops in an existing layout is relatively contained. Moving the sink, adding a kitchen island, removing a wall or improving an older property’s electrics introduces several trades and more checks along the way.

Availability also matters. Kitchen cabinetry, appliances, specialist tiles and stone worktops are often ordered well before site work starts. Lead times vary by supplier and finish, so it is wise not to book a start date until the key items are confirmed. A missing appliance or delayed worktop can leave an otherwise finished kitchen temporarily unusable.

Older homes across Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire can bring their own surprises. Uneven floors, ageing pipework, outdated consumer units and walls that are not quite where drawings suggest are all manageable, but they can affect programme time. A professional survey and clear allowance for contingencies are far better than a rushed promise that ignores the condition of the property.

The guide to kitchen renovation timelines, stage by stage

1. Initial survey, ideas and budget: one to three weeks

The project begins with a visit to understand how you use the room and what needs to change. For a busy family, that may mean more storage, a larger dining area and durable finishes. For another household, the priority may be opening the kitchen to the garden or creating a better space for entertaining.

This is the right point to discuss a realistic budget, likely structural work and the services required. A good contractor will explain what is included, what may require further investigation and what choices are likely to influence cost. Early clarity prevents expensive changes once cabinets have been ordered.

2. Design, planning and technical details: two to eight weeks

A like-for-like kitchen replacement may only need a final layout and service plan. More ambitious work can take longer, particularly where walls are being removed, steelwork is needed or the kitchen forms part of an extension or refurbishment.

At this stage, kitchen plans should be checked against the practical details. Door swings, appliance clearances, extractor routes, lighting positions and socket locations all need thought before fitting begins. It is also worth agreeing flooring transitions, skirting details and decoration boundaries so the finished room feels properly integrated with the rest of the home.

If planning permission or building regulations approval is required, this can extend the pre-construction period. Not every kitchen project needs planning permission, but structural alterations and extension work may need drawings, calculations and formal approval. These requirements should be addressed before work starts, not discovered halfway through demolition.

3. Ordering and pre-start preparation: four to 16 weeks

This stage often takes the longest, even though little is happening in the kitchen itself. Cabinetry, worktops, appliances, taps, sinks, tiles and flooring need to be selected and ordered. Bespoke items and premium finishes can have longer lead times.

It is sensible to finalise appliances before electrical and cabinetry details are signed off. An integrated fridge, boiling-water tap or large range cooker may need specific ventilation, load capacity or cabinet sizes. Changing them later can mean revising the design and delaying fitting.

Before the start date, agree how access will work, where materials will be stored and what protection will be used through the property. A tidy site and respectful daily routine matter greatly when the work is taking place in the centre of family life.

4. Strip-out and first-fix work: one to two weeks

Once site work begins, the existing kitchen is removed and the space is prepared. This can include lifting old flooring, taking down ceilings, removing non-structural partitions and exposing services. If a wall is being altered, steel installation and structural work are completed at this point.

Plumbers and electricians then carry out first-fix work. Pipes, drainage, cables, lighting circuits and extraction routes are installed before walls and floors are closed up. This is one of the most important stages to get right, because it determines how well the finished kitchen functions every day.

There may be a short pause for inspections, drying time or specialist work. For example, a newly levelled floor needs adequate time before certain finishes are laid. Trying to compress this stage can compromise the quality of the result.

5. Plastering, flooring and kitchen fitting: two to four weeks

Walls may need plastering or making good after first fix, followed by drying time and preparation. Depending on the programme, flooring may be installed before the cabinets, after the cabinets, or partly around them. There is no single correct approach: the best sequence depends on the floor type, cabinetry and desired finish.

Kitchen units are then delivered and fitted, usually over several days. Once the base units are in place, the worktop process begins. Laminate worktops can often be fitted quickly, while stone, quartz and some solid-surface worktops normally require a template after the units are installed. Fabrication and fitting can add one to three weeks.

This worktop gap can feel frustrating, but it is necessary for accuracy. A template taken from installed cabinets helps ensure clean joints, correct overhangs and a precise fit around walls that may not be perfectly square.

6. Second fix, finishing and handover: one to two weeks

The final stage brings the room together. Appliances are connected, sockets and switches are finished, taps and sinks are installed, and the extractor is commissioned. Tiling, splashbacks, decorating, silicone sealing and final joinery details are completed around the fitted kitchen.

A careful contractor will also carry out snagging with you. Small adjustments are normal on a detailed renovation, whether that means aligning a door, touching up paintwork or refining a seal. The aim is not simply to finish the installation, but to hand over a kitchen that is ready to use and finished with pride.

How to keep your project on track

The most reliable kitchen renovation timelines are built before demolition begins. Make major product decisions early, keep a record of agreed finishes and avoid changing the layout once cabinetry is in production. A change may be worthwhile, but it should be made with a clear understanding of the cost and programme effect.

It also helps to plan a temporary kitchen. A kettle, microwave, air fryer, washing-up bowl and a small preparation area can make several weeks of disruption far more manageable. If you have young children, pets or work from home, discuss these routines with your contractor before the start date so access and working areas can be organised sensibly.

Communication is the other essential ingredient. You should know who is managing the project, what is happening next and when decisions are needed from you. At Primary Construction, coordinated in-house trades and clear project communication help reduce the handovers that can slow down more complex kitchen works.

A well-planned kitchen renovation is not about rushing every trade onto site at once. It is about doing each stage in the right order, allowing time for quality work, and keeping you informed from the first survey to the final clean. With realistic expectations and a dependable team, the temporary inconvenience soon gives way to a kitchen that works properly for your home.

Josh and his team have worked on several projects at our house, not least a new flat roof and large lantern. The boys were very friendly and polite - and importantly neat and tidy! Costings were very reasonable and work was carried out on time. It was also great that Josh was always available for a chat - unlike some contractors we have used in the past.
